Step 1:

I am going to be creating a 3 inch pom pom.  You will need a piece of cardboard that is approximately half an inch larger than my finished pom pom.  Begin by wrapping a few strands around the cardboard.

Step 2:

For a standard sizes pom pom you will want to wrap at least 100 times around your cardboard.  Wrap your yarn around at least 100 times and cut the end.  Thread your tapestry needle through a piece of yarn approximately 3 feet long.

Step 3:

Push your needle under the entire bundle of yarn.  Remove the needle and tie your piece of yarn as tightly as possible.

Step 4:

Flip the cardboard over, bend it in the opposite direction and do the same thing with another piece of yarn threaded on a tapestry needle.

Step 5:

Again, tie this as tightly as possible.  This time, do not cut the ends.

Step 6:

Slide the bundle off of your cardboard.  Flip the bundle over and bring the ends of the extra yarn up and over the bundle and tie again.

Step 7:

Now, cut all of the little loops you have created.

Step 8:

Make sure you cut through all of the loops.

Step 9:

Use your scissors to trim your ends and shape your pom pom.  All done.
