Create your very own personalized wind catcher modeled after the beautiful kites of Asia
Scissors
Popsicle stick
Glue stick or tape
Yarn
Markers
Hole punch
Ribbon or paper streamers (optional)
Stickers (optional)
Decorate your paper bag with markers, stickers, whatever you like. Have fun with your designs!
Once it's all decorated, open up your bag. Push your finger into the center of the bottom of the bag to create a bit of a peak. Crease that peak on the outside of the bag into a fold. Make half a punch (half of a circle) on the fold to create a single hole when you open it up.
You should now have a single, circular hole in the middle of the bottom of your bag.
Cut a piece of yarn -- it can be any length you like, but I recommend about two to three feet. Tie your string to the center of your popsicle stick. The popsicle stick will give your string some support while in the bag so that your yarn doesn't pull itself out of the hole! To make extra-sure that your yarn doesn't come off of your stick, you can also wrap a piece of tape around where the yarn is tied to the stick.
Gently insert your yarn into the hole in the bag from the inside and pull it through. Your popsicle stick should now be on the inside of your bag, and the yarn should be sticking out from the bottom.
To make your kite extra-beautiful, you can add ribbons or streamers! I like streamers about two to three feet in length.
Glue or tape the end of your streamers to the inside opening of the paper bag.
Continue layering your streamers until it's just how you like it!
Let everything dry, and your kite is ready to soar!
Should you decide to use a longer string (like a real kite), I suggest wrapping that excess around a second popsicle stick. That will keep it from getting tangled while you are launching your kite. If you do decide to go this route, you will want to do the popsicle/string insertion a bit differently:
a. Prepare your excess string by tying and securing the end to a popsicle stick, then wrapping all but 3 feet around the stick.
b. Feed the three feet of string through the hole in your kite so that it comes out the bottom of the bag.
c. Now tie the second popsicle stick as instructed above.
