Next time you visit the doctor, ask for two tongue depressors to make this wonderful musical craft! The popsicle stick kazoo is a great way to explore sound and make music.
2 tongue depressors or popsicle sticks
1 large rubber band
2 thin rubber bands
Decorations: markers, stickers, rhinestones, etc.
Take the large rubber band and stretch it over one of the popsicle sticks from end to end.
Next, use scissors to cut two pieces (about 1 inch each) from your straw.
Place one of the straw pieces UNDER the rubber band on the tongue depressor, about 1/2 inch from the edge. Place the other straw piece ON TOP of the rubber band, also about 1/2 inch from the edge.
Now, take the second tongue depressor or popsicle stick and place it over the straws exactly on top of the first one. Pinch it tightly so the loose straw piece doesn't wiggle out!
Last step, use the remaining rubber bands to fasten it together. Tie one rubber band around both tongue depressor edges, behind the straw piece. You'll have to tie it around quite a few times so it's nice and tight. Repeat with the other rubber band on the other edges of the tongue depressors.
Let the music begin! Place those sticks to your lips and blow to hear the wonderful sound of the kazoo! If you would like to decorate your kazoo use tiny stickers or color with permanent markers. Don't use washable markers of you will end up with color all over your face! If all you have is washable markers, place a piece of tape over your artwork so the color does not transfer to your lips.
