You will need:
  1. Duct tape (or other study tape)
  2. Hot glue, tacky glue, or tape
  3. Popsicle stick
  4. Firm cylinder: wine cork, spool from ribbon or thread, or dowel, etc.
  5. Plastic bottle cap
Intro:

If you know some children that love catapulting things across tables, this is the perfect craft! Instead of using your fine silverware to chuck peas and blueberries, kids can create their own catapults out of popsicle sticks, old plastic bottle caps, some glue or tape, and wine corks. Hey, perhaps you can supply some craft pom-poms and your kids can use those mess-less fuzzballs instead of tonight's dinner as ammunition!

Step 1:

Begin by taking your firm cylinder to the middle of your popsicle stick. Simply lay a piece of tape over the cylinder and in the same direction as the popsicle stick so the tape cannot be seen from the opposite side.

Step 2:

Now flip the popsicle stick over. On one end (either one, it's up to you) you are going to stick the plastic cap. You may use more duct tape folded over so that it is sticky on both sides, hot glue, or tacky glue. Either way, place a bit of tape or glue on one end of the stick and firmly hold the cap on top until dry.

Step 3:

And that's it! There's the general idea for your catapult. Bombs away!

Craft Variations:

As you can see, this craft can be large or small. Going to a hardware store and buying a large slab of wood could yield one massive catapult. As long as the cylinder shape is comparable to the size of the wooden stick, you'll have a fantastic catapulting device!

Sophie's Tip of the Week

Write each child's name on a large paper grocery bag and have it available at the beginning of the event. This is a great place to keep everything they make as well as all of the shoes, sweaters and toys they abandon during the event.
