You will need:
  1. Polar fleece (as many colors as you like)
  2. Sewing machine
  3. Scissors
  4. Marker
  5. Yardstick or ruler
Intro:

With the winter months here, we could all use a cozy hat to keep our ears warm. With a bit of polar fleece, you can let your creative heart make a winter hat for every outfit. Although a bit a sewing is required, children can do the rest once the sewing is complete. This is a great piece of clothing for adults and children to create together!

Step 1:

Lay the yard stick or ruler on the polar fleece. Measure a piece of polar fleece that is 24 inches by 12 inches and use the marker to mark the correct dimensions. Cut along the marker lines.

Step 2:

Fold the piece of fleece in half so you end up with a square shape.

Step 3:

Now adults, it's time for your help with the sewing machine. Use the machine to sew two of the ends. Make sure to leave one end unsewn for the head to fit.

Step 4:

You should have a kind of pocket, with three closed ends and one open end.

Step 5:

The base for the hat is complete, and now it's time to decorate. Cut strips of polar fleece in the same or different colors and patterns. I recommend cutting 6-inch strips that are about 1 inch wide.

Step 6:

Pinch two little ears at the top of the hat and tie a strip around each!

Step 7:

You can also fold up the bottom of your hat and use scissors to cut horizontal slits across the bottom.

Step 8:

Be sure to cut all the way through both layers of the folded hat.

Step 9:

String your fleece strips half way through each hole.

Step 10:

Tie a knot and you've got a fantastic warm fuzzy hat!

Step 11:

You can also make a puff ball at the top instead of ears by pinching the top of the hat together and tying a number of fleece strips around it.

Sophie's Tip of the Week

Instead of loose candy in your pinata fill it with bags containing the same amount of candy in each. This eliminates the pushing and shoving and allows each child to receive the exact same amount of candy.
