Movable Magnetic Car or Truck
- Mini toy cars and trucks
- Hot glue gun
- 2 magnets (1 large, 1 small)
- 2 popsicle sticks (one fat one thin)
- Markers
- Track decorations (construction paper, tacky glue, glue stick, pom-poms, corks, all and any craft supplies)
- Scissors
- Cardboard or paper plate
Kids love driving miniature cars and trucks on and around furniture, floors, patios, just about any hard surface they can find! Usually in order to move these cars around, your hands have to be all over them. Well, with the moveable magnetic car craft, your hands will no longer be in the way! Instead, let magnets work their magic!
Begin with the small magnet, small popsicle stick, and toy car of choice.
Flip the toy car upside-down and cut off a piece of your popsicle stick that will fit down the bottom of your toy car between the wheels.
Have an adult use hot glue to glue the stick in place.
Place a small dab of hot glue on the popsicle stick and place the mini magnet on top of it.
Finally, take your large magnet and large popsicle stick and place a small dab of hot glue on the tip of the stick and glue the magnet to it. Be sure that you glue the magnets on the appropriate positive and negative sides, so that the exposed sides are attracted to each other. (You can test this by waving the large magnet over the one glued to the car. Do this prior to gluing it to the stick.)
Now for the car or truck's terrain! You can decorate a paper plate as I've done, or make any kind of track you want your car to drive on. Keep in mind your track must be stiff, but still thin enough to allow the magnets to work through its surface. Place the car on the road, and hold the popsicle stick with the magnet on the bottom. As you move the stick, the car will drive along the landscape you've created!
If you're really getting into this craft, you can make an entire town of roads! This works really well on a piece of cardboard. Get out some markers, felt, toy buildings, and anything else you desire. Again, place the car on top and the magnetized stick on the bottom to maneuver the car.
