Step 1:

We are using a duct tape sticker to create the negative space on your artwork.  Lay a piece of parchment paper on your work surface.  Lay two pieces of duct tape sticky side down on the parchment paper.  Be certain to overlap the pieces by approximately 1/4 of an inch.

Step 2:

Cut a shape out of the duct tape and parchment paper.  In this instance I am going to create a heart.

Step 3:

Peel the parchment paper off of the duct tape and place the duct tape sticker in the middle of your canvas - or wherever you would like.

Step 4:

Now it is time to paint.  Lay one line of paint at the very top edge of your canvas.  It can be any color.  What is important is that it is at the top edge.

Step 5:

Next, cover your canvas with as many other colors as you like.  Place the paint wherever you like.

Step 6:

Hold your canvas tightly and slowly pull the squeegie down from the top end, where you laid that line of paint, all the way to the bottom.

Step 7:

Wipe off the edges and let it dry for at least a few hours.  I have found that it is best to only make one pass with your squeegie. Multiple passes tend to create muddy colors.

Step 8:

When the paint is dry remove the sticker from the canvas.  As you can see, there may be some bleed from the paint underneath the tape.

Step 9:

You can cover up that bleed and also embellish your canvas with jewels, markers or even some more paint.  You can also write a message inside your negative space if you like.
