Thanks to Katy Perry’s “Candyland”-inspired video, we’ve received a fair number of requests for sugar-laden dance parties of late. “Candyland” is one of those really fun themes that lends itself to amazing, oversized decor. There’s just something about giant wrapped candies that makes me smile!

Pool noodles are amazing things. They are lightweight, colorful, inexpensive... and they have a vast array of uses other than just keeping one afloat. Like many things in our warehouse, we don’t really use pool noodles the way they are supposed to be used. The other day, Freda suggested that I share some of the various way we use our pool noodles, since the winter months are now upon us and some of you may be tempted to either chuck your summertime floaties in the trash or store them away in some forgotten closet.

The other day I was working with one of my dear colleagues, Jane. She’s been with me for a long time now, and I regard her as a beloved worker, and also as a friend. We’ve been through a great deal over the years, she and I. Jane has two children, who are now on the brink of manhood. Her eldest is in college, and her baby (I say this quite facetiously, since he’s taller than me!) is a senior in high school. Both are bright, funny, tall and willowy, quirky, creative, and handsome. They have that devil-may-care attitude that comes with being a teen, but they are good kids.

My husband and his good friend are heading down to Mexico for a little boys’ weekend. Since we live close to the San Francisco Airport, and the guys have an early flight, Flutey (as he’s called) spent the night at our place.

This morning Flutey came stumbling out of the guestroom, hair sticking out in all directions, and plopped himself down at the kitchen table. I offered him some coffee, to which he replied, “Sure -- double cream, double sugar.” Now I worked as a coffee gal back in New York City, so I knew exactly how to serve it: two spoonfuls of sugar and extra cream so that it takes on a light café color.

I happen to be one of those people who makes a New Year’s resolution each year. To be truthful, there’s usually a whole list of things that I’d like to accomplish during the year: lose 10 pounds, exercise more, master Spanish, visit my folks more often, and learn how to cook tasty low-fat meals. But I might as well just have this same list on my computer and print it out every year, since the same five resolutions always seem to make their way on there. I always have incredibly high hopes for myself. However, in my thirty-odd years of making resolutions, I have learned that if I really want to make a change, it’s best to tackle it one resolution at a time.
